First, let me start by saying, “I am not sick.”
So my throat hurts just a teeny tiny bit; there’s a slight sensation of feeling like it’s on fire, but I am definitely not sick.
I have no appetite and truth be told, nothing even sounds appealing. Still, not sick though.
I feel like there’s fur growing in my mouth no matter how many times I gargle with salt water and Listerine. It’s an odd feeling, the fur, but I’m most certainly not sick.
I’m surrounded by illness: friends, coworkers, but nobody in my actual household is down and out. Well unless you count Oscar, my baby kitty, but I’m pretty sure people can’t catch feline diseases. I should double-check Web MD just to be safe though.
“How can I be so sure I’m not sick?,” you ask poignantly.
I’m too stubborn and ornery to get sick. Plus, I used my handy-dandy iPhone flashlight App to inspect the back of my throat, and everything looks copacetic. Since I don’t have any type of medical degree, I’m pretty sure I’m qualified to make that assessment. Note to self: disinfect iPhone.
Which brings us to today’s What I Ate Wednesday post. As usual, let’s give a huge round of applause to our fearless group leader, Jenn from Peas and Crayons.
Much as you might have guessed, I’m going to share some eats from when I was absolutely, most definitely, not sick and not really hungry either.
Keep in mind, no appetite plus pain when swallowing equates to less food consumption, so to make up for my poor portion sizes, I’m sharing two days worth of tasty morsels. It’s still not a tremendous amount of food, but it would be a pretty good amount IF someone were sick…not that I am admitting to such a travesty.
Here we go.
Going clockwise, breakfast was tea with some local honey and a squirt of lemon juice followed by a banana and two slices of toasted cranberry walnut wheat bread. Day two breakfast was a pear and a couple of these energy bars, although I only took a picture of one. False advertising, I know. My bad.
Lunch was this amazing cobb salad, which despite the odds (cold weather, furry mouth and NOT being sick) still tasted phenomenal. I managed to squeeze in, in just one dish, my greens, some veggies, protein, calcium and healthy fats. Not too shabby, if I do say so myself, and I do (obviously).
Lunch the following day was not as tremendous. It was a Pasta and Three Bean soup, and it came from a can (Boo Hiss; down with the can). I choked it down with some more tea with honey and lemon juice.
Dinner was much better: a defrosted homemade Broccoli and Cheddar soup from a prior weekend paired with a cheese and chive scone.
Dinner the second night wasn’t as exciting: a smoothie crammed with fruit, baby kale, and half an avocado. I drank it down with some egg noodles and butter on the side.
There you have it, two days in the life of someone (namely moi) without an appetite, but who is most definitely not sick.
What do you eat when you’re “not sick?” Do you ever deny your sickliness? Have you ever had a science project growing in your throat, and did it feel furry?
Maria@sinfullynutritious says
All your meals look fabulos, but the Cobb salad looks particularly amazing. I am on a huge Avacado kick right now.
Meghan says
That’s a pretty good kick to be on. I love avocados and you can do so much with them. Thanks for stopping by Maria.
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
I LOVE kitty pictures! Cool a veggie cobb salad…I usually see them with meat. You’re moving me toward that smoothie, Meghan!! Happy WIAW!!
Meghan says
I love my kitty cats so maybe I’ll share more pictures. I have tons of them.
When you make your own salad, you can put whatever your little heart desires on top and call it whatever you want. Veggie Cobb Salad, why the heck not?!
I hope you try the smoothies soon. Honestly once you do, you’ll never look back.
kirsten@FarmFreshFeasts says
For a minute I thought you put egg noodles and butter in your smoothie. I know I learned the beet and orange smoothie trick from you, but this . . . not as appealing.
I am sorry you are sick. Oops. NOT sick. My household was sick before Christmas and it hit me the day after we returned from Michigan. I was down for several days. But once I felt well enough to make my own smoothie after driving to get some fresh greens from the store 🙁 I started to perk up.
Hope you’re feeling better soon!
Meghan says
Smoothies with egg noodles and butter would have to go into Laura’s Strange But Good (or not) link ups.
I’m so happy to hear you learned the orange and beet smoothies from me. That makes me smile.
Jessie says
The homemade broccoli & cheddar soup looks delicious!!
Meghan says
Thaks Jessie. It was Jenn’s recipe from Peas and Crayons.
Cecilia @ My Life Sans Gluten says
Oh wow.. I’m feeling the exact same way you are… I am not sick, I’ve got a half marathon to do this weekend!!!
I hope you get over it soon!!
Meghan says
Oh my gosh, a half marathon. That’s super impressive. Good luck; I’ll be thinking of you, and thanks for stopping by.

Great-looking soup! 🙂 Broccoli and cheese was probably one of my favorites growing up.
I definitely denied my sickliness multiple times during middle and high school. There were plenty of occasions where I felt like death and really should have been at home. But I was too concerned with my 6 years of perfect attendance to care! Kind of stupid now looking back at it…
Meghan says
6 years of perfect attendence. Wow, that’s impressive, although I’m a big fan of taking it easy and resting when your body says it needs it. Then again, I also live in a world of denial, so you shouldn’t listen to me. 🙂
Giselle@myhealthyhappyhome says
Sorry you’re not feeling good. I just got over the stomach flu myself and for several days kept telling myself I was “not sick”. I even went to the grocery store thinking I was better until I walked by the seafood department. Ugh! Despite not feeling well, your eats look delicious!
Meghan says
Sick food and stomach flu’s don’t mix. Not even a little bit. I’m sorry you were down and out, but glad to hear you are over it now. Hopefully, I’ll be over it (even though I’m not sick) soon.
Allie says
Denial is the best medicine! But heck, I can’t even whip up a salad that looks half that ggod when I feel on top of the world–You definitely can’t be sick 😉
(If you were sick, though, I’d totally tell you to “Feel better soon!” IF you were sick.)
Meghan says
I live in a world of denial…and unicorns. I rather like it here too.
I was pretty impressed with my Cobb Salad too, and even though I really didn’t want to eat it, I’m glad I did because it was fantastic. Toppings are what makes salads fun.
Thanks for the good mojo, even though I’m not sick.
Jess @ JessieBear What Will You Wear says
mmmm your cobb salad looks so pretty and delicious.
Meghan says
Thanks Jess. It was delicious. 🙂
Antonia @ Health Inspirations says
OMG that cobb salad looks fantastic. Would you like to come over for lunch tomorrow and prepare that salad for me?? And get better soon, even though you’re NOT sick!! 😉
Meghan says
Yeah no problem. I always wanted to see Munich.
Sunnie@moderngirlnutrition says
Your smoothie looks so fresh and healthy! Hope you get to feeling better Meghan! 🙂
Meghan says
Thanks Sunnie!!
Lot-O-Choc says
when im ill i normally live off soup and other “warming things”
also try to load up on my fruit and veggies!!
love the look of your cobb salad – may have to have something similar for my lunch today..yum!
Meghan says
Me too. I feel like if I eat healthy and nutrient dense foods, I’ll be back to normal in no time.
Luv What You Do says
Your baby kitten is SO cute! I am so happy to hear that you are not sick! I too like to deny the obvious but because I work with kids it is always around me! Catch up on sleep and keep eating all those healthy foods. YOu will be even less sick in no time!
Meghan says
I’m still waiting for you to get your own baby kitty so I can see pictures on your blog. Thanks for the advice. Sleep and good food are pretty sound ideas.
Brittany says
I ALWAYS deny the sickness. Up until I am snotting green stuff and unable to breathe. I was sick for like a week last month and it was HORRIBLE. I don’t handle it well. You’ve been eating some good “not sick” foods, keep the fluids coming!
Meghan says
Thanks Britt. I feel if I keep eating nutrient dense foods I’ll get better in no time. Fingers crossed it works.
