WIAW: The Breastfeeding Edition

June 15, 2016 by Meghan 48 Comments

I eat more now than I did when I was pregnant.

I blame the nursing. It sucks the life or literally the milk out of me.

Supposedly, breastfeeding moms need to consume on average an extra 500 calories a day. I don’t hate it, although I’m not a calorie counter, so I have no idea if I’m hitting the right number. What I do know is I’m hungry pretty much all the time, and since I tend to listen to my body, I eat and I do it often.

WHAT-I-ATE-WEDNESDAY-NEW-BUTTON-PEAS-AND-CRAYONS

As a result I thought it would be fun to join the What I Ate Wednesday shenanigans and share a day of eats. Therefore, I give you my bites and bobs from last Friday, a day where I managed to capture almost all the food on film. Thanks for hosting my sister from a different Mister.

Liquid Starter: I start every day with a cup of warm lemon water.

Lemon Water

First Breakfast: maple nut oatmeal with a sliced banana on top. This has become a staple lately, mainly because it’s easy and filling. Plus you can never go wrong with a banana.

Maple Nut Oatmeal with a Banana

Second Breakfast: a giant bowl of homemade granola gifted to me by the lovely Kirsten with some strawberry honey Greek yogurt, fresh raspberries and a side of coffee.

Orange Cranberry Granola with Greek yogurt and raspberries

I skipped third breakfast in favor of a run, although these days it’s usually a bagel loaded with butter. I did manage to score a bite of the Hubby’s though.

Bagel with Butter

Lunch: toasted multigrain bread with hummus, provolone cheese, half an avocado and lettuce.

Avocado, Cheese and Hummus Sandwich

Snack: a Coffee Crisp candy bar and a non-pictured banana. Thank you Cora for the sweet treats. It really pays to have foodie friends.

Coffee Crisp

Second Snack: I ate a smorgasbord of fruit, cheese, carrots and a KIND bar while I was nursing Ave. These platters have become a regular in my rotation.

Fruit and Cheese Plate with Carrots and Kind Bar - Breastfeeding Snacks

Dinner: a Chipotle burrito bowl with brown rice, black beans, fajita veggies, cheese and salsa. Sadly, they forgot my guacamole, although I still managed to eat the entire thing just fine.

Chipotle Vegetarian Burrito Bowl

Dessert: one chocolate fudge brownie courtesy of my in-laws.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl Brownie

Not too shabby if I do say so myself, and I totally do. It turns out this breastfeeding business does have some perks, aside from the whole health of the baby and all that jazz.

Do you have any staple meals in your diet? What do you order from Chipotle?

    Meghan,
I’m glad you enjoyed the granola. It would be a lovely thing to take on the road–if I hadn’t just picked up romaine AND Bibb AND a bag of salad mix AND a bag of spinach AND a bouquet of kale in the farm share.

    Ah, Spring!

Your eats look awesome and you and Ave are benefitting from the variety, the color, the flavors and textures.

    Great job!

I switched from a medium share to a small share which was genius. Last week, we got kohlrabi, a giant head of lettuce, green onions, kale and strawberries. The kale and the strawberries are already gone and I did tap into the lettuce and the onions. The kohlrabi remains untouched. Baby steps, pun not intended. πŸ™‚

Seriously, nursing hunger ain’t no joke. I went straight from nursing my first to being pregnant to nursing my new guy (FYI: breastfeeding is not foolproof birth control. just sayin.) so I’ve basically been eating non-stop for 3 years.

That’s kind of wild. I bet it’ll be strange to cut back when the time comes. I wonder if it just happens naturally when you stop breastfeeding.

Duly noted about the birth control or lack thereof.

I miss Chipotle πŸ™ Not as much as I miss you, but I still miss it. And seeing as the last time I saw either of you was all the way back in October, I’m thinking we all need to meet up stat. Burrito bowls with white rice, black beans, and salsa and guac if my stomach is feeling up for it that particular day. Also… I want everything you had to eat this particular day… the brownies most of all.

Mmm, I am now craving strawberries (sadly strawberry season is already over here in NC) and Chipotle. I know I should get the burrito bowls, but the flour tortilla wrapped around everything is so satisfying. I’m partial to the veggie burrito – black beans, rice, cheese, salsas, guac.

Lately I’m eating an avocado a day, maybe even more. Can’t get enough fat!

So many delicious eatssss! Where do I get brownie making in-laws?! Jesse’s family could not cook to save their lives…. and I’m not even kidding. The only thing I’ve seen Jesse’s mom cook was some weird frankenstein potato dish where she poured it out of a box, added water and somehow it became scalloped potatoes? The excessive consumption is a benefit of nursing although the work involved along with the trials and tribulations don’t make the food worthwhile. Nursing is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, although it is getting easier so I’ll take it. Good luck to you and if you ever have questions, I’m happy to help try to answer them.
