WIAW: The Pregnant Appetite Edition

January 20, 2016 by Meghan 60 Comments

Since getting knocked up, my appetite has taken a little upswing.

What I mean to say is I’m suddenly able to take in a lot more food without feeling like a beached whale at high tide. It’s definitely strange, and I’m adapting to my newfound, undeniable, and seemingly never ending appetite.

WHAT-I-ATE-WEDNESDAY-NEW-BUTTON-PEAS-AND-CRAYONS

Case in point: I housed a boatload of peanut butter directly after a big lunch the other day because I was still hungry. A serving of granola, which used to satisfy me before, barely wets my whistle now and I often go back for seconds. Full plates of food I couldn’t dream of finishing three months ago, go down like a spoonful of sugar, usually followed by an actual spoonful of sugar.

Some days I scratch my head and wonder if I’m harboring a tapeworm, while other days I recognize this is a result of growing a tiny human. Either way, I thought it would be fun to bring some pregnancy eats to the What I Ate Wednesday link up today.

Therefore I give you my Sunday eats, from the week before last.

First Breakfast: a giant glass of straight up H2O, followed by warm lemon water, and then some nectar of the gods, also known as coffee. I drink this trifecta daily.

Lemon Water

Coffee I Do What I Want

Second Breakfast: a fruit and kale filled smoothie which I very nicely shared with the Hubby.

Breakfast Smoothie - Banana, Raspberries, Melon, Pineapple, Pomegranates, and Kale

Third Breakfast: Bagels are my everything right now. I definitely didn’t share with the Hubby.

Bagel with Butter

Snack: fistfuls of this edible fruit arrangement, including some of those sea salt chocolate covered caramel apple slices, which were drool worthy.

2016 Edible Fruit Arrangement

Lunch: a ginormous spinach salad bigger than my head and certainly my fork with two hardboiled eggs, avocado, carrots, bell pepper, green onions and blue cheese. Some roasted red pepper salad dressing completed the look.

WIAW Lunch Salad with Hardboiled Eggs, Avocado, Carrots, Peppers, Onions and Blue Cheese

Snack Part Two: a Coffee Crisp. It pays to have Canadian friends, in chocolate that is.

Coffee Crisp

Dinner: was a much bigger bowl of Acorn Squash Soup than seen below, although it was topped with feta cheese and pomegranates. It was also accompanied by two Blue Cheese and Chive Drop Biscuits.

Acorn Squash Soup with Pomegranates and Feta

Blue Cheese and Chive Drop Biscuits. The perfect way to enjoy fresh garden chives. Make a double batch, freeze the dough and enjoy all summer long.

Dessert: was another banana, this time dipped in peanut butter and smothered in chocolate chips.

Peanut Butter, Chocolate Chips and Banana

For shits and giggles or really comparison purposes, you can find a pre-pregnancy WIAW here. It’s definitely less food, although just as tasty.

What’s the verdict? Am I harboring a tape worm or a tiny human? If you’ve ever been pregnant, how did your appetite change?

Yum!!!! Everything bagels are the best. I love mine topped with hummus + avocado. Also, the soup and biscuits sound like a perfect combination. I don’t know how the weather is in Cleveland but it’s chilly here in Virginia and I wouldn’t mind a meal like that to warm me up!

Those biscuits look so tasty! When I was pregnant I found I was most ravenous the first couple months and then things tapered off a bit. After those first couple months I didn’t notice too much a change from pre-pregnancy volume wise, probably because I wasn’t working out as intensely. I was definitely all about chocolate chip cookies and Doritos, preferably in the same snack time!

I think I was probably the exact opposite. My appetite was tiny in the beginning when I was still working out, probably because I was nauseous all the time. These days, I’m no longer exercising and eating anything and everything in sight.

Chocolate chip cookies and Doritos sound delicious right about now.

It’s so funny how food consumption changes when the circumstances change. I see this in myself as well. Anyway you’re eating much more (I checked your comparison post) but I am still super impressed how healthy you eat and how much fresh food you get in.
If I was pregnant I imagined myself to be like, okay I can as well get fat now and eat all the fried food.
I have an eye on the drop bisquits. They are on top of my must try list 🙂

I crave all the fried fatty foods along with the sweets. I try to make it a point to allow myself those cravings, so long as I pack in some nutrients with it or prior. Hence, you see lots of sweet potato fries and salads. Bagels and smoothies. Soup and candy bars. 🙂 It’s a good system.

You’ll love the drop biscuits. The best part is you can customize them to your hearts content.

OMG I was so beyond ravenous all day long that I thought I would never return to normal! I ate 3 breakfasts, a huge lunch followed by a second lunch as a lunch dessert lol. By the time I got home for dinner, I was stuffed. I also avoided sweets when pregnant, how funny? I was savory all the way and gave up pb for a while too because it didn’t sit well. Hormones are so funny like that. Enjoy every bite!

You eat like 500% healthier than I did when I was pregnant! I wasn’t a healthy eater at the time anyway, probably my first was the best and then my second and third involved huge oversized bacon egg cheese bagels, cheetos, and curly fries whenever I could get my hands on them! And I think ice cream too if I remember correctly. Then while nursing I ate the exact same stuff and yet lost all the weight and then some. Growing people in your body is just weird!

Growing people inside your body is weird and kind of awe inspiring at the same time. I just keep acknowledging the fact my body is not mine right now.

Love this! Okay, so let’s see. I’ve definitely been pregnant a time or two and while I don’t really remember how much more I ate, I do recall different cravings for each child. The most interesting one was when I was pregnant with Freddy I craved crunchy bleachy laundry detergent. The stronger the clean smell, the better. There’s a name for this rare craving in pregnancy, it’s called “Pica.” And it essentially indicates that the body needs iron, lots of it. Interestingly enough, Freddy was born with a blood disorder. I just find our bodies so fascinating and the pregnant body the coolest of all.

I’ve heard of Pica and thankfully I haven’t had any cravings for bleach or laundry detergent. I’ve been really making it a point though to add tons of greens to my smoothies, and I actually feel a difference in my energy levels when I do.

Also with regard to our bodies: Holy Shit, it completely amazing what they can do.

I’m not harboring a tiny human and I still get weird cravings all the time and finish plates of food seemingly too large for my 5ft tall body. Like this weekend, all I could think about was a Bareburger turkey burger and fries, and when I finally got it I ate most of the “sharing plate” of fries for the table. And considered whether their burgers are really big enough. Although sometimes I do get the beached whale feeling afterwards…something eventually to look forward to not having? Maybe.

When I flew as a Flight Attendant with Delta I would sometimes fly the Boston to Bermuda route and I would always bring an extra bag. We would have about an hour between our flights and I would hit up the store in the airport and load my extra bag up with those Coffee Crisps and those Honeycomb Crisps. At the time they weren’t available in the states like they are now. The other crew members thought I was nuts until I would share, then I started a trend.

While I have no experiences in pregnancy appetite and the likes myself you do seem to have a much better tolerance [or even cravings for] vegetables than what I heard was common. Yay vegetables! I can’t imagine not craving them but I guess special circumstances can do that to you.
My appetite is rather huge in general but through the roof during that time of the month.
That little tape worm inside of you gets its nutrients through some pretty stellar foods. One day you’ll teach her the public banana skills and she’ll be proud of her cool mum.
