Currently: October 2016

I’m days ahead of schedule with my Currently post for October. Seriously, there are at least a solid handful of days left in the month, so I say I’m kicking ass and taking names. Oh and this is my third post this week (that’s a big deal for me)? Boom goes the dynamite. 

On that humble note, let’s begin:

Current Book: The Fiery Cross, the fifth book in the Outlander series and I am enamored. In the beginning I thought the books were a little too lengthy (they average 1,000 pages), and now I can’t get enough.

Current Triumphs: Ave had a shitty nap day yesterday and while it wasn’t fun, it didn’t bother me mentally the way it normally does. I’m calling it a success.   

Current Needs: adult time with boozy cocktails and full sentences, spoken in anything other than sing-song, unless of course it’s the kind of belting it out that happens after multiple drinks.

Current Indulgence: apples and peanut butter. Hello Fall, my don’t you look sexy.

Current Drink: coffee; it’s my everything.

Current Food: I’m on a sweet potato bender. Between salads, chips and soon to be casseroles, I might turn orange without touching a single pumpkin; now that is impressive.

Scalloped Sweet Potato Casserole with Bechamel Sauce and Candied Walnuts

Current Bane of Existence: I’ve got a kitchen counter full of squash and no desire to cook them. Thanks to my CSA, I’m holding two acorns, a pair of butternuts, a dreaded pumpkin and my least favorite, the spaghetti squash. It doesn’t matter how you dress that last guy up or how much cheese is involved, it’s still stringy and weird. Also, it will never be pasta.

Current Obsession: Making a Murderer, the Netflix series. I’m a sucker for real life crime drama, and this story has me hooked (line and sinker).

Current Non-Guilty Pleasure: picking up some new Halloween washi at Target last weekend. In my non-defense, I had a coupon. Plus, most of the stuff I can use year round.

Current Confession: I need a break from the kid. Thanks to her bottle boycott, we haven’t spent more than a few hours apart in months and months and months, and I’m starting to get a little stir crazy, not to be confused with my previous form of crazy.    

Current Excitement: “I’m teaching Ave to drink breast milk out of a shot glass,” she says with a straight face. One way or another, she’s gonna take nourishment from someone other than me.

Current Blessing: Oscar. While he doesn’t actually babysit, he does entertain my child, which means he captivates her attention for a solid fifteen minutes on the daily. For those not in the know (cough, me six months ago, cough), this amount of time is huge in baby world.

Current Heartbreak: my beloved Nature’s Bin is closing its doors after 42 years of business. I’m devastated.

Current Wish List: another batch of these bars. When it comes to my sweet tooth, the force is strong with that one. 

These sweet magic layer bars, packed with walnuts, chocolate and coconut, are irresistible and ooey gooey good.

Current Thankfulness: despite bad naps or bottle boycotts, I get to stay home and raise the kid, and that is amazing.

Current Mood: caffeinated and tired; no explanation needed.

    Your current mood? Totally get it. just saying.
    Your natures bin is closing!? I don’t even know the place and I’ve fallen in love with it (and all its samples) just through your blog. How sad!
    You’ve also beaten even me with your current squash stash. My counter is also a little over run – since I’ve had negative zero motivation to do anything with any of them this week. I’ve been choosing old bread from the freezer instead. Good thing they keep for like, years.. right?
    I wish I could take you out for a drink. I could also use one. Or two.

      I did manage to get that night out and a drink (or two). It was magical, and I’m even doing it again this week…squeal. 🙂

      Still haven’t touched the squash though. 🙂

    I love this post. I was so happy to see your third post of the week! You sound tired and frustrated though. I wish I could come out there and help. I had a couple of kids that wouldn’t take bottles either, and one thing that worked was getting the other person to give them their bottle on their lap facing outward, in a bit of a reclined sitting position, so that they’re not in breastfeeding position. Have you heard of the Baby Einstein series? There’s one called Baby Mozart and Baby Beethoven is good too. It’s like crack for babies, and she will LOVE it, and be so distracted that she might even possibly drink the bottle if she’s in the position I was talking about.

      She loves Baby Einstein…in fact, anything musical is pretty much her jam. It helps that I sing to her almost all day long.

      I definitely need a break, and I need to give myself the permission to take one, almost as much as I need the break. That being said, I did get out last weekend and I have plans to do the same this Friday. Also I went on a lunch date with myself yesterday and it was lovely. Hooray.

    YES!!! Making a Murderer was my life when it released. Gosh I watched the eff outta that show. It got me good. And pissed me off! I just saw an interview with the guy on dr Phil. It was nuts, don’t watch it till after. That show made me feel hopeless but whatever life goes on. Obviously
    The only way I’ve enjoyed spaghetti squash is sautéed with lots of butter, garlic, and parmigiana cheese. I like acorn squash. Now that stuff roasted is definitely my jam.

      I don’t mind squash in soup. Maybe I can puree it and then turn it into some sexy, sassy soup. So much work though….

    I’ll have you know I just spent 10 minutes trying to find this Patton Oswalt skit in which he summarizes why being a new parent is similar to taking huge amounts of hallucinogens.

    I couldn’t find it, of course. The Oracle failed me for once….

    He surmises that instead of gobbling huge quantities of LSD, one simply has to be a new parent – because every light has a tracer and he can taste colors and all sorts of shit.

    Effin’ hilarious.

    Because it’s TRUE.

    She will sleep again. You will stop feeling like there is sand in your eyes all the time. You will start remembering how it feels to sleep until you wake up. I swear on my muffin pans, you will.

    Also – we have coached up our amazing daughter to not get us up until 8:00am – she is very good at it. Just plays in her room with her things and hangs out and then comes in and we can all start the day like humans.

    That will be you. You will see. And my, how you’ll dance…

      We dance now, so she’s getting plenty of practice. It’s a daily ritual.

      Also while she hates day time naps, she goes like a champion at night, giving me 12 hours on average with no feeds. I couldn’t ask for better night time sleep so I figure the daytime naps is the universe’s way of evening things out.

      I need to implement this self play bit….one day.

    I’ll take the acorn squashes off your hands and swap you for some local seasonal strawberries?? Or maybe a bottle of local wine might be more appealing right now…??
    Your snaps the other day involving the ‘boob and the cup’ completely cracked me up btw – mostly because david walked in the room at the exact point you were explaining what you did and his face was priceless! Haha!

    Surely someone might take over the running of Natures Bin?? Hopefully!

      Oooh I’ll take the strawberries for sure. I can get wine anytime but fresh, beautiful strawberries….

      The Hubby didn’t realize how I got the milk into the shot glass until this weekend (I’m not sure how) but he was probably as surprised as David when he realized. Ha!!

    The spaghetti squash thing! I KNOW! Granted, I’ve never actually tried one to be able to give a solid opinion one way or the other, but it LOOKS stringy and weird, so I’m going to assume it tastes the same. Kabocha I love, though. Acorn and butternut less so. ALSO. shit I forgot what I was going to say. I’ll let you know when I think of it ;P

    Totally echoing spoons on this- Spaghetti squash is NOT spaghetti, and the one time I baked one, it burst in my kitchen! I’m still heartbroken over Nature’s Pin- They provided us a shared pickle the size of a cucumber.
