It’s safe to say I am not your typical Healthy Living Blogger.
As evidenced by Monday’s post, I’m not a crazy workout machine, and I’ve got a different spin on edibles as well. I don’t diet and I don’t count calories, in or out. I could care less the amount of carbs in any given thing, and I don’t subscribe to the whole macro philosophy, unless of course we’re talking Macklemore and his new song, Downtown. I can jam to that. β« “Dooooooowwwwntown.” β«
I’m the opposite of most. I don’t identify with any particular food group: not Paleo, not Vegan, not Primal, not Carnivores, not Gluten-Free, not Whole something or other. The closest would be Vegetarian and you’d have to ignore Tuesday night’s BLT for that to fly.
Truth be told, the mere idea of super structured food plans, diets and detoxes, where restriction is a key component, really ruffles my feathers. Since I’ve done a number of posts on those topics in the past, I see no reason to go there today, ignoring of course the first handful of paragraphs.
Instead, I thought it would fun to share what I actually see when I look at my edibles, WIAW style.
I give you my Sunday eats.
Morning Nourishment
Warm Lemon Water: I see a boatload of nutritional goodness.
I drink it for the immune system boost, although warm lemon water has been known to energize and improve mood, aid in digestion, detoxify, promote healing, and reduce inflammation.* *
Coffee: I see nectar of the gods.
I drink mine with a splash of Almond Milk and a scoop of Raw Sugar to satisfy my sweet teeth because I have more than one.
First Breakfast
Banana: I see my favorite food, eaten publically, as it should be.
It’s portable, delicious, creamy, and yes, even phallic. I’ve been known to eat them in multiples; giving a whole new meaning to double fisting. Raises eyebrow.
Second Breakfast
Orange Juice, Fresh Fruit and a Mini-Chocolate Chip Scone: I see hydration combined with a tasty finish.
Scrambled Egg Wrap with Roasted Corn, Black Beans, Charred Tomato and Cheddar Cheese with a side of Crispy Red Skinned Potatoes covered in Ranch Sauce: I see a drooling Homer Simpson emoji because those spuds, twice fried, are out of this world.
I also see a dose of farm fresh eggs packed with a hearty helping of protein alongside other vitamins and minerals. Hello veggies and beans. Come to mama.
Snacks
Maple Sugar Candies: I see comfort food, and yes I did have my first fire of the season on Sunday.
Peach and Cheese Stick: I see something quick and easy to tide me over until dinner.
Dinner
Stuffed Artichoke Soup with Brown Rice and two slices of buttered bread (not pictured). I see a great way to use up some overcooked brown rice alongside the loves of my life, artichokes and asiago. Also, I see lots of fiber, and we all know fiber is your friend.
I inhaled two bowls before calling it quits for the day.
Before I turn the mic over to you, a word about our What I Ate Wednesday hosts:
Jenn is currently get situated and settled in her home, while Laura is helping her momma pack up her old one. Arman just moved two weeks ago and is already working on a new blog initiative to help others grow and monetize their blogs, which means y’all are stuck with me for today. Cackle, cackle.
Link away my friends, link away.
What do you see when you look at your food? Do you see calories, macros or the like?
Kate says
And now I’m gonna have all kind of thoughts next time I eat a banana in class. You are seriously a comedian.
When I look at food I see nourishment and enjoyment. When I’m hangry, I see anger management. I don’t have any particular label either- just try to eat healthy and wholesome, but also enjoy food for all it is!

The only thing I really pay attention to when I eat is how the food will make me feel after i eat it- but sometimes even that goes out the window if I really want something! I’ve found that a combo of paleo+ whatever I feel like eating has worked well for me. I love that you already had your first fire of the season! And maple sugar candies make it even better.

This is a kind of philosophy I can get on:) I love food. Simply put. So while yes, I eat for nourishment, I also eat because I like the act of eating, of preparing a meal and of course of tasting. That’s my philosophy π

I haven’t counted or paid attention to calories in so many years that I definitely don’t see calories when I look at food. I get so annoyed in restaurants when they display the calorie counts next to the meals, especially desserts, but I understand that some people need to track that stuff to stay in check.

For some reason, the calorie counts don’t seem to bother me in well known restaurants. I tend to think they might help the average American, who really is struggling with obesity to some degree, whereas in our community we don’t seem to have hardly any overweight people. Hmm, that’s fascinating to me. Why is that?

It depends on the food. When I look at a quarter pounder from, say, McDonald’s, I see a stomach ache. But, when I look at a bowl of oatmeal, apples, chocolate, etc. I see happiness and nourishment.

Okay so this is so interesting! I have never ever in my life been told to say what I see when I look at my food. To be a bit vulnerable here, I’d have to say that I don’t have the greatest relationship with food. I grew up watching my mom diet non-stop (she still does) and she pretty much killed it for me. Some foods were “bad”, some were “good” etc etc. Since I’m a bit of a rebel, I think I quit enjoyed eating all the “bad” food…right in front of her. So I guess when I look at Doritos and chocolate and cookies, I think “bad food” and then I enjoy eating it. If it’s healthy, I still enjoy eating it but I certainly have to be in a righteous mood and those… are few and far between.

So thoughtfully delectable. When I see my food, I see many things. Flavor bombs, fuel, energy, sunshine, roses, happiness in my belly. I certainly don’t have a history of great food relationship but I will say most of what I see is my mood after I eat it. I know enough now to see if what i crave is for pleasure, hunger, mood, emotional, etc. it’s up to me to give a hoot… Bingo

Your views on food and diets match up to mine quiet well. If people spent more time choosing fresh, real food, and less time worrying about the amount of macros in their 100 calorie snack packs, they’d be much better off……..and MUCH happier!

Jen @ Chase the Red Grape says
With doing crossfit, I must admit I do have to sometimes see food as fuel but that’s just to make sure I give my body what it needs to repair muscles – i.e. I will make sure that after my morning workout I will make sure I get a good source of protein and carbs. I measure and record nothing. I don’t count stats on food and calories, pfft, they are the worst thing to look at when trying to decipher food and its merit. Especially the dangerous notion that less calories equals a ‘better choice’. I don’t care how many calories are in my banana or avocado… I eat them because they taste amazing, fresh and are real food!
Wow, I think my comment came over as a rant… Must have needed it!
Oh and that wrap looks amazing. Eggs and veggies are a match made in heaven!

I thought maybe you would identify with “clean” eats, because… you know…. they go with your fast feets.
Perhaps you shared this previously, you probably did, but why come you don’t eat no meat?
Chris recently posted…Happy?
Meghan says
Ah yes, the illusive clean eats phrase. It does mean something different to all. For me, it’s whole foods in their natural state.
With the meat stuff, I’m just not a huge fan. As a child, it was something I always left on my plate every night and I don’t dig the way most of the animals are treated in industrial farming so it made sense for me to walk away. That being said, the Hubby is a carnivore and I’ll prepare ethically sourced meat for me and even dabble on occasion myself. Basically meat is never my first or second or even third choice, but if I am craving something, I’ll go for it.

And this is why I love you. Well, one of the reasons anyways. I sometimes feel out of the loop on the whole healthy living blogger thing because I rarely talk about the latest health trends and never really mention anything fitness related. I also have a tendency to profess my love of the jelly bean. But I feel like, with so many people obsessed with clean eating and hardcore exercise 6 days a week, more people need to show some love to the less healthy things in an effort to balance it out. Yes? Yes.
