Week in Review: The (Not So) Self-Care Edition (#51)

October 3, 2016 by Meghan 52 Comments

Get your pads and pens ready because it’s time for the Week In Review.

The Week In Review is a list, in its purest form, not of the things you still need to do, but of all the things you have done in the last seven days. It’s an achievement list, an ode to yourself, a celebration of sorts, and a virtual pat on the back or smack on the ass. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

Need more details? Head here.

Week In Review Button Final

♫ You can do it, put your list into it. ♫

Let’s get listing:

I have a confession to make. Today’s post was supposed to be a self-care edition where I told you how I pampered myself and lounged on the couch while eating bonbons. I planned to give myself a pedicure, flex my fingers with more bracelets, and get a massage. I was going to bask in sun patches, meditate my non-ass ass off, and dance in the rain. I was going to glow with perspiration after some glorious workouts. I was going to soak in the bathtub and get my happiness on.

The truth of the matter is I didn’t do any of that. I took care of the baby, showered most days and managed to make a few decent dinners. I also did a little bit of baking with Ave’s help.

Early on in the week, I was a mad accomplishing machine and by Friday afternoon, I had lost all steam. It’s possible I overdid it or perhaps I’m physically and mentally ready for some Fall hibernation. Whatever the case may be, it’s all gravy baby. These weeks happen and instead of lamenting them, I’m going to cut this post short in favor of lounging on the couch (also known as taking care of the wee one) and eating bonbons. Speaking of which, can somebody send me some bonbons? I sure would appreciate it.

One last thing, letting myself off the hook and taking a breather…that right there is a form of self-care. I highly recommend it.

It’s your turn. I want to hear from you. Link up and get yo’ list on.

Out of steam by Friday and slacking on the self care – you and me both, hm? I’d say we’re in for a joint day of chocolate/bonbon eating and watching Gilmore Girls. At least for myself ‘ve concluded that when you even just ever so slightly intend for a week of more conscious self-care life will throw a monkey wrench in those plans.
Are those Magic Cookie Bars you baked with Ave’s help [I’m sure for her it was the other way around ;)]? They look glorious.
I hope your Monday is off to a good start and this week will allow for some more lounging and pampering.

Funny… come friday my WIR sounded just like yours. At first I had literally typed how I failed at the “self care” edition. But I guess by the end of the week I was able to see what i’d done as some for of self care, and even get in a couple more traditional things come the weekend. But your last phrase…. that says it all. Its about the mindset, baby. Plus – making delicious food is always self care.

I am dying! Ave is the cutest little gangster ever 🙂

We all have those weeks. Pressured self-care activities are not really doing anyone a favor. You would probably not really relax if you cram ine a massage. Sometimes when I schedule fun activities and then I am working or doing something completely different these things can become the opposite of fun to me. Fall hibernation sounds incredible.

Also I want you to come over and cook for me. We could teach Ave to do the dishes and the guys could watch sports!

P.S. I’ll send you bonbons. There’s still space in the package I am going to ship to you this week. Any favorites?

Sometimes I enjoy frontloading my weeks with work and productivity so that then I can relax when I get more tired at the end of the week. Usually I try to do my school work on mondays and tuesdays and finish that so I can do more fun stuff like blog and social later in the week.
I think a self care week sounds fabulous. I plan on doing that next week 🙂

That’s why I think I actually really love when it comes to Sunday as a sabbath, a day of rest. It’s always really refreshing to not work on a Sunday besides doing the really necessary things. That way we’re actually really ready for the week here. 🙂

Gurrrrrl I feel ya. You definitely gotta practice self care by NOT worrying about it and giving yourself a break to just do life. I love what you said. Self care is totally about taking care of YO self in whatever way that means. Today I chose sleep. I love sleeping. I missed a few other things but so what I got sleep. I totally let myself off the hook for basically everything but what needs to happen and then whatever else feels good. I’m with ya sister. My tatas agree.

I may have been wrong about green being Ave’s best color, I think it might be bright pink. She’s lovely and perfectly delicious in bright pink! Maybe it’s not the color she wears at all, it’s her sunny little face..

Self care and pampering can be taken on in many forms! I love to bake a pie! It’s cathartic. My nails aren’t any prettier though, with dried flour, butter and cream caked in the cuticles! Pie pastry is best when gently toss by hand! Those bars look so enticing! Granola? I could almost smell them! I just bought some coconut flakes too!

You know the old saying, If a little rain can ruin the best-laid plans of mice and men, think what an earthquake might do! Children are the game changer, but your little earth quake sure is the best! A little couch time, some fall nesting in, and all of those self care luxuries you had planned will happen….in due time. Maybe not all in the same week tho. Compromise is good also!

It’s a roasted eggplant salad and one of my favorites to use the purple veggie. You can find the recipe here: http://www.healthyseasonalrecipes.com/mediterranean-eggplant-chickpea-salad-feta-parsley/

The bars are coming next week so hang onto that coconut. You might want to stock up on walnuts and chocolate chips too. 🙂

Children are game changers and while she can give me a run for my money, she can also be absolutely adorable. She’s starting to chatter like crazy these days. She has so much to say. 🙂

    Meg,
Instead of self-care, I had a week of spouse-care. I know you know that drill. While I am still chauffeuring him around, he is doing better each day. He even wore Robert Barker out (a return of RB’s sore leg/old football injury) so now RB is joining him on quarters.
In the meantime, I had a last-minute request to do a sponsored post and I decided to go for it. So there’s that. This week I’m hosting a dozen Creative Cooks who are coming to eat Indian food at my house. I am sure we’ll be fine, but oy it’s a bit annoying to think that I’ve got to clean and cook. However, once I get the house cleaned it should be easier for next week when I’m hosting book group. I figure I may as well rip the bandaid off (note to self, buy more bandaids) and get the hosting duties out of the way.

You’re tempting me with your food. And I mean Ave. She’s edible.
