Today’s post should be known as What I Over Ate this Weekend. I’ve written about portion control before and let’s just say when the entire thing is in front of me, I have no control. I also didn’t do a great job of taking pictures of everything. This should be fun.
Now that I’ve got you all amped up (not), welcome to another edition of What I Ate Wednesday. Give a big shout out to Jenn over at Peas and Crayons for sponsoring our crazy weekly fun.
I’ve decided to share with you my Sunday eats, which involved traveling to Buffalo for “family dinner” with my nearest and dearest. The only spooky thing about this day was the sheer volume of food consumed by moi. I’m almost embarrassed to share it, but sometimes we fall of the wagon, and sometimes we do a cannon ball on our way down. I look at it this way: I hardly ever eat to excess, so I was due for a little splurge and the majority of things I demolished were homemade and well worth the calories. Maybe not the side of heartburn, but that’s why moderation is key. Sadly, I lost my key on Sunday, but it has since been found.
Since I no longer seem to be able to get out of the door on time (and I used to be so good at this!!), breakfast was a plethora of snacks consumed in the car on the way to Buffalo. Except my pear, which was way too juicy to eat in the Prius, so I ate it at a gas station while the Hubby pumped the petrol (that sounds hot or maybe just British, which is the same thing really).
In the car, I munched on candied almonds, cashews, and an apple while reading all about Anne Hathaway’s wedding in my People magazine. After this quick road trip, I can officially say I am now caught up on my celebrity gossip. Blogging for Dummies…not so much, but it’s all about priorities people.
When we arrived in B-Town, my Da and stepmom had the house decked out with snacks a plenty. I happily consumed them all in mass quantities. I had at least one, fresh from the oven, raspberry muffin, chips and Bison French Onion Chip Dip, which puts all other dips to shame. It’s a good thing they only make it in Buffalo or else I’d end up weighing three hundred pounds. I also ate a whole lot of cheese seeing as it was calling (screaming) my name…repeatedly. I tried the cranberry, the jalapeno, the roasted pepper and, of course, the sharp cheddar. Yep, I taste tested each and every one, and I also had some crackers (not pictured) to wash them all down.
By the time dinner rolled around, I was full from all my excessive snacking, but it didn’t stop me from eating more. Nope, not even a little bit.
I had black bean and veggie stuffed bell peppers, fruit (I love me some fruit!), applesauce (two different kinds), and not pictured: spaetzle, cabbage, and rye bread. Now I would be remiss if I didn’t share the main course and what the rest of my family happily ate. They put down six different types of brats since we were rocking an Oktoberfest theme. I am the lone weird vegetarian, but they love me anyway.
Since I think fruit is beautiful and pretty much the best thing ever, I’m going to show you a solo shot. No family dinner, or meal really, is complete without a jumbo fruit bowl because that’s how we roll.
Now I wish I could say it ended here, but it didn’t and this is likely why I ended the evening with a case of heartburn.
For dessert, there was (all homemade) ginger snaps, an almond roll and date truffles. The almond roll is my grandmother’s recipe, and she passed away twenty years ago, so not only was the dessert delicious, but it brought back some wonderful memories too.
Special thanks goes to my whole family for managing to stuff me like a Thanksgiving turkey all in one day. Hopefully, I can manage to show more restraint at that meal.
What did you eat this weekend? What’s your favorite indulgence? Does cheese speak to you too?
Jessie says
oh my word, this whole post is screaming to me! i seriously want it all 🙂
Meghan says
Thanks Jessie. I did pretty much eat it all, and I’m still stuffed (and still eating of course). Happy WIAW.
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
Everything looks good…especially the fruit salad!
Meghan says
Thanks Fran. Happy WIAW.
Brittany @ Delights and Delectables says
Wow! That food looks amazing!! Family has a way of getting you to eat a boat load don’t they?? It is worth it though. 🙂 I can’t have cheese, but nuts and fruit speak to me!
Meghan says
I’m not sure what it is about family, but you’re right. You end stuffing your face.
Fruit and nuts are great; they are staples for me too. Thanks for stopping by.
Eating 4 Balance says
Those desserts all look so tasty, especially the muffins! And my breakfast usually consists of snacks too. I wonder why that is?
Meghan says
Thanks. Maybe we eat snacks because we can’t pick just one thing….
Antonia @ Health Inspirations says
This was a wonderfully written post.
You’re not the only one who pigged out over the weekend though….I did too. And since I am sick at home all I seem to do these days is eat. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’d have to roll me back to work next work 🙂
All your eats look delicious. I love family meet-ups since they always revolve around food!!!
Happy WIAW!
Meghan says
What a bummer that you are sick. At least you got to hang with you family this weekend. I hope you are feeling better soon. Happy WIAW.
Allie says
Visiting family just CALLS for overeating, I think it’s a requirement! Especially when family serves fresh muffins (or cookies. My mom ALWAYS has cookies waiting for me when I visit…it’s dangerous), cheese platters and everything else that is delicious. And free. And prepared by someone else ;D
Meghan says
You hit the nail on the head…delicious, homemade, prepared by somebody else (what bliss), free, and you don’t have to do the dishes either!! Happy WIAW.
Allie says
I forgot about the no dishes element–even better!
Rebecca @ Blueberry Smiles says
That fruit salad is beautiful!
Meghan says
Thanks; it was delicious. My dad is like the fruit king. No meal is complete without a giant fruit bowl.
MassachusEATS says
Everything looks AMAZING but especially those cheeses! Every now and again we let our stomachs get the best of us – enjoy it for a day then hop back on the wagon!
Meghan says
Oh boy, did I enjoy it. I can never seem to pass on cheese.
Heather @ In Her Chucks says
That fruit salad looks delicious! I have a slight addition to fruit and have been known to eat an entire bowl that size on my own 🙂
Thanks for sharing. Happy WIAW!
Meghan says
It was soooo good. My dad is the fruit king. A bowl like that is a pre-requisite for every meal. And it also happens to be where my fruit addiction comes from. As fas as addictions go, I’d say fruit is a good one for us to have.
Heather @ In Her Chucks says
Couldn’t agree more 🙂
KaraHadley says
Those cheeses look awesome! And I firmly agree that traveling is the perfect time to read celebrity magazines. If you’re not driving….whomp whomp.
Meghan says
What if I was driving… 🙂
Cheese is just amazing.
caren @ voodies says
I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but your fruit salad is what excited me the most. I’m so restricted on fruit now that I crave it!!
I miss buffalo…. when I lived in toronto, the big thing was taking day trips to buffalo for the outlet shopping.
Meghan says
I would too because I’m a complete fruit junkie, but you’re working towards such a great goal. It will be here soon, and you’ll be able to jump into a bowl if you want at the end.
Liz @ IHeartVegetables says
LOVE me some stuffed peppers!!! I’m actually not a big cheese fan in general although lately I’ve been addicted to feta!
Meghan says
I’ve got a general addiction to all things cheesy. Feta is a good one though since it’s one of the better ones for you. Stuffed peppers are great!
Liz says
WOWIE!! I am so jealous! What a feast, start to finish! I would have stuffed myself too, a crime not to when that kind of food is served. The cheeses were beautiful, so so beautiful. I will be fantasizing about them now…
Meghan says
You’ll have to join us sometime for a feast.
