Here’s the deal; it’s Wednesday which means another exciting edition of my daily eats, except this time it’s not going to be exciting. Nope, not even a little bit. There’ll be no gimmicks, no “best of,” no hair bands, no garlic festivals and certainly no jazz hands. Instead it’s going to be a simple display of what I ate on Sunday.
While my past posts have been fun, they’re not always realistic, since I typically try to showcase a day of really titillating food (can you blame me?). So here’s a regular day of eats, without the bells and whistles.
Now I know what you’re thinking. This little clip could potentially be construed as a gimmick, but it’s really just a good song, which happens to have a catchy hook, and also pertain to Sunday’s simple and realistic pleasures. Plus, I like to do most things with a song in my head, a hop in my step, and a good backhand if you cross me (kidding, although I’m sure there’s a song for that too).
Before we get to the eats, I have to thank Jenn over at Peas and Crayons for hosting this regular roundup, especially since there are more than two hundred people who participated last week. Damn, that’s one hell of a party! Food bloggers can definitely rock out. Or at the very least, consume massive quantities of food.
Sunday morning started early; I was up at the crack of dawn or 5:45 a.m., as they call it, round these here parts, because I was participating in the JDRF Walk to help cure diabetes. Check out the link if you want to find an event in your city. It’s a great cause, and it would be nice to see a cure in our lifetime. Pitch over.
The walk took place at the Cleveland Zoo (how cool is that) and although it was only three miles, I knew it was going to take a couple of hours since there were thousands of people and so many animals to check out. Even Darth Vader made an appearance, and yes, I realize the height of Vader coupled with the length of the Hubby’s free Sports Illustrated wind breaker makes me look like a twelve year old Thumbelina. Whatever, there was a whole line of kids waiting to get their picture taken so I didn’t have time to perfect my outfit. It goes with my whole “reality” concept for today’s post anyway.
Since the walk was going to take a couple of hours, I knew I needed more fuel than a piece of fruit, but also something quick and easy. I went with a good old-fashioned bowl of cereal: Maple Pecan Crunch to be exact. It wasn’t mind-blowing, but it was good.
While it was a lot of fun, we had less than ideal weather for the walk. It wasn’t raining (that stopped minutes before), but it was wet and really cold, so when I got home around noon, I was not only starving, but freezing too. I threw together a quick omelette for the Hubby and I with some sautéed onions and peppers and a quick shred of Co-Jack cheese. Some pieces of toasted Marathon Multigrain bread with mixed berry jam completed the meal. To drink, I heated up some apple cider with nutmeg and a cinnamon stick. Let me tell ya, the only thing better than breakfast for dinner is second breakfast (those Hobbits were onto something).
Lunch was really satisfying, but somewhere along the walk (probably the minute I stopped feeling my toes) I got the idea of chili lodged in my brain, and once something is stuck in my mind, it stays until it’s been fulfilled. I’m like a junk yard dog with a bone, so I diced and I sliced (ninja style) and threw the makings of chili into my crock pot for later.
Then I napped, and it was lovely. I can’t remember the last time I’ve done that. Oh wait; it was last weekend, but before that, I really can’t remember. Apparently, it’s not only my taste buds which change with the temperatures. Ya gotta love a good nap, and ya gotta love waking up from the same nap to the spicy aroma of chili. Yeah, that was really nice.
What’s even better is my new bowl, so nicely displayed here, has a nifty handle, which means I can curl up on the couch with my bowl (i.e. chili) grasped firmly in one hand. No more trying to balance a bowl of liquid close to my face or wasting my arm strength by going back and forth between the table and my mouth. Instead, I just bring the two closer together. Brilliant and ridiculously lazy, which is kind of a great thing sometimes.
Another great thing is Spabetti’s double fudge and fig truffles. Yeah, I made them on Saturday night, but didn’t get around to trying them until Sunday (how’s that for restraint?!). I ate two of these little delights and one of them was in the afternoon (sorry, couldn’t help myself). Her recipe rocks, even if you use dates instead of figs. And her balls look so much nicer than mine (again, I couldn’t help it).
So there you have it. A simple day of eats, and looking back on it, a pretty good one at that.
What did you eat this weekend? Have you tried Spabetties truffles yet? When was the last time you napped, and don’t you just love it?

Your recipe was a winner.
I picked up that bowl at the Garlic Festival: authentic Polish pottery. Beautiful and functional.

Waking up at 5:45 on a Sunday is waaaay too early!!!!
Your eats look yummy….especially that BOWL of chilli. Do you have the recipe somewhere on your blog? And where did you get the bowl??? I want one too!!!! Happy WIAW 🙂
Meghan says
It was way too early but so worth the cause. I got the bowl at the Cleveland Garlic Festival; it’s authentic Polish pottery so it’s beautiful and functional. The chili is on my site under Recipes and then in Breads, Salad and Soup section. I used more bell peppers than that recipe and at the end, I added the cooked rice directly to the crock pot of chili. So good you dn’t even miss the meat (although that’s easy for me to say).

Sorry the weather wasn’t in your favor on Sunday, but i think it’s amazing you still went out & walked for such a great cause!
Love your new bowl.. and the chili inside of it looks delicious too! 🙂
Meghan says
Thanks Jessie. Even though the weather was crappy, the cause was worth it, and I’d do it again. And again. And again.

dang I Couldn’t get up that early on a saturday, much less a sunday! haha
Those truffles look amazing!

The truffles were amazing. Sadly, I get up at 5:45 a.m. every day for work so Saturday and Sunday’s are normally my “sleep in” days. Thanks for stopping by and saying Hello.

Dude, I think my mundane could knock your mundane out of the park!!!! 🙂

Bring it. 🙂 I love a good competition. Better yet, maybe my mundane could meet with your mundane and be a whole big lovefest of mundane together. They could be magically mundane together. Sounds mundane, right?!
Thanks for stopping by and saying Hello.

Hmm… fresh apple cider… One of the wonders of fall season 😉 Those fudge truffles look amazing. Must give that a try some day! ~Happy belated WIAW~
Meghan says
You really should try them. They are very easy to make and sinfully delicious (without the sin part). Happy WIAW!
Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli says
Omg, you call this this mundane…like it’s a bad thing? Because everything looks pretty frickin delicious to me! I want that omelette…and the toast with the jam…and hell, hand over the cider while you’re at it! It’s been so long since I’ve had some good colby/jack cheese! It’s one of my favorites…but lately, it’s been all about the manager’s special Gruyere that I picked up at Kroger last weekend! And you KNOW food just tastes better when it has that little orange and yellow tag on it! 😉
You’re new bowl is adorable…and so practical! I need to find myself one of those! And guess what…I’ve been planning on making chili for over a week! Just gotta get to the store for some beans…it is DEFINITELY happening this weekend for sure!
Meghan says
I love Gruyere, nothing like a good Swiss (cheese, that is). I grabbed Harvarti this last go and am thinking about a grilled cheese with honey and rosemary. Saw it on Pinterest, of course.
The bowl rocks. I got it at the Garlic Festival, but grabbed the vendors card and you can score your own bowl at http://www.polishkitchenonline.com
The more expensive bowls were hand painted and are signed. Oooh, fancy.
Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli says
Ahhhh! They are all so beautiful! Now I just need to convince myself that it’s completely normal to shell out 40 bucks for ONE bowl! Lol
And I love a good Havarti…especially the kind with dill! That grilled cheese sounds delish!
Meghan says
I know they are crazy expensive and much easier to buy when you are caught up in the excitement of the festival. Think of it like an investment. Or add it to a birthday wish list.
