It’s that time again; time for another exciting edition of What I Ate Wednesday!
And the crowd goes wild, or at least the food bloggers do.
For anyone new to this game, where the hell have you been? I kid. On a serious note (or at least as serious as I can be), WIAW stands for What I Ate Wednesday, and it’s a day of glory and revelry for food bloggers everywhere since we get to publish an entire days worth of eats from start to finish. It gives you a glimpse into our twisted little worlds and definitely our daily eats. First and foremost, mad props to Ms. Jenn at Peas and Crayons for hosting our weekly party (throw your hands up), even when she’s experiencing technical difficulties. Now, that’s dedication. Make sure to stop by her site and say hello; after you finish here first, of course.
Typically on WIAW, I capture a days worth of weekend eats; either Saturday or Sunday because it works out better for a variety of reasons. I have more time to prepare what I think will be a pretty meal; sadly this doesn’t always work out. I have the ability and wherewithal to stage the photo; a sprig of parsley here, a clove of garlic there. And most importantly, I can photograph my plate of food outdoors in order to capture the natural light, and I do mean natural; there’s no sun here in Ohio; hasn’t been for a while. I’m not bitter though. Alright maybe I’m starting to get a little bitter. Note to self: must go buy fancy sun lamp or remember to take vitamin D. The former sounds cooler, although the latter will be more cost effective.
In any event, I thought about showing you my weekend eats, but then realized I divulged the majority of them on Monday. Plus, it seemed a little more real, more raw and perhaps a touch gritty to share a random weekday, especially since the majority of my meals are eaten at my desk at work, in crappy lighting, but eaten nonetheless. This is how I eat five seventh’s of the time (fraction alert, snap) so it just makes more sense to give you The Real Deal. Don’t worry I’ll be back to pretty in no time.
Let’s begin.
In sticking with my real theme, I’m going to share my Tuesday eats with all of you. It started with a standard banana.
My coworker said you shouldn’t eat bananas in public; I can’t imagine why.
Apparently, I’m a pirate. All that’s missing is my eye patch and a parrot named Petey. The simple fact I shared this ridiculous picture with you just shows I don’t care about the public perception of my banana eating ways. In fact, I think I’ll make it a point to eat my bananas publically from here forward. Well except the ones that get blended into my morning smoothie. Speaking of smoothies (nice transition, right?), I didn’t have one on Tuesday morning. Instead I ate banana and then I washed it all down with some homemade granola, topped with a scoop or three of Greek yogurt and a splash of fresh blueberries. I love blueberries. They taste great and are full of antioxidants, which will help keep me young. Who said this edition wasn’t going to be pretty?
Lunch was from my grocery store, Nature’s Bin (I still ❤ them very much). They sell these amazingly fresh prepackaged meals for all shapes and sizes (carnivores, vegheads, and vegans, oh my). Tuesday’s little gem was a Vegan Squash Risotto and before you turn your nose up (like my other coworker did), it might not be made with heavy cream, but it is made with wine. Plus, ya gotta give them presentation points for the freshly diced parsley on top.
My afternoon snack was simple and delicious: an apple with some natural peanut butter slathered on at least half the slices (there goes another fraction for those keeping count; is that just me?).
Dinner was an old stand by; a classic, if you will. I had a tomato who was on his last legs (provided they have legs) and some green onions leftover from our Super Bowl party, so it seemed only right to make scrambled Huevos Rancheros and top them with black beans, sautéed onions and peppers, cheddar cheese, diced tomato and chopped green onions. I got your protein right here…thumps chest wildly (and apparently I’m juicing again or had too much coffee this morning).
Finally, I rounded out the evening with the last slice of chocolate chip cookie pie. Yes, I absolutely stashed away a slice the night of the party. Mama didn’t raise no fools.
All in all, not too shabby for a full day of eats, and a weekday no less. In fact, they were actually kind of pretty. Wow, who knew?
Full disclosure time (after all, this is the Real Deal Edition), I’ll be home alone tonight (this is not an invitation to come and stalk me) so I suspect dinner will look a lot like this, minus the coffee.
There ain’t no shame in my game.
How about you? What’s a day in the life of your eats? Tell me all about it: the good, the bad, and even the poor lightning.
Sabrina @ Living, Learning, Eating says
Breakfast and that chocolate chip cookie pie look amazing – pinned it! And breakfast for dinner = the best. No shame.
Meghan says
Thanks Sabrina. The cookie pie was delicious. I’ve made it a bunch of times now, and it doesn’t get old.
Jess @ JessieBear What Will You Wear says
MOTHER OF GOD I NEED A SLICE OF THAT PIE.
Also I simultaneously find it funny and annoying that you get weird looks when you eat bananas in public haha. My bf always makes it a point to giggle at me when I whip out a banana from my purse lol
Meghan says
Bananas are so easy to eat anywhere; that’s part of their charm, yes?
Allie says
Your workday eats ain’t too ugly! Especially that fancy parsley garnish. When in doubt, garnish! That should be a saying. Or not.
I post way too many pictures of unphotogenic-work-food-in-tupperware. If I were a real food blogger, I’d make a fancy version on weekends. But that takes effort and the ability to think about/do anything else but eat when hot good food is ready. (And I see nothing wrong with eating bananas in public. Or opening my tea bag packets with my teeth in public. No one’s called HR…yet.)
Meghan says
Garnish is great, and this wasn’t even me. It’s how my grocery store packages the food. I actually really like presentation and a little bit of staging (not in a Dance Moms type of way, and since I’ve never seen that show, I’m not sure if this statement is accurate), but I like getting fancy on the weekends with my food.
I think teeth should be used for more than just chewing, and if opening tea bags is your thing, I say go for it.
Fran@BCDC says
How do you make everything, including a bowl of cereal look so good?! The pirate photo is VERY attractive! 😉 have a great day, Meghan!
Meghan says
Thanks Fran. You’re so sweet. The cereal shot was taken in front of the window on Saturday morning so I actually got some natural light, hence the reason it turned out pretty good.
MassachusEATS says
As soon as I saw that chocolate chip pie photo of yours, I said (outloud!), “Holy heck!” and clicked over here as fast as I could. YUM!!!
Meghan says
The pie is great. The recipe comes from Chocolate Covered Katie, but I’ve got no qualms making it.
Kaylee @ Spicy Sweet and Petite says
Oh my does that chocolate chip cookie pie look good! Love your blog! 🙂
Antonia @ Health Inspirations says
I just love that picture of you eating the banana 🙂 …And that pie looks just incredible!!!!!!!
Meghan says
I have no shame!
Brittany says
You eat those bananas in public, and you eat them proudly!! EAt them sexually, eat them anyway you choose! I love that gorgeous looking bowl of granola goodnes!
Meghan says
I absolutely plan to. I think I’ll keep spare bananas lying around for emergency humor situations.
I’m glad you like the granola; that is actually my own homemade version.
Eating 4 Balance says
Whenever I eat bananas in public, I tear off a chunk at a time to chew. Haha. Way too embarrassed to embrace the full on snackage like you 😉
I think I am more impressed than I should be at your cookie pie. Yes, it looks (and sounds) delicious. But, more than that, I am super impressed that it did not fall apart with your mid-air hold. That is one sturdy dessert.
Meghan says
It is sturdy. It’s also rich and moist even though it has no flour, butter or oil. I think it’s the beans, which still taste nothing like beans in this pie. I keep trying to taste it, but I can’t.
caren @ voodies says
Okay, that granola/yogurt image is pretty close to perfect. The chocolate chip cake???? I have no words….. (just envy)
Meghan says
Now that makes me happy because the granola is my own homemade version. The cake I made, but it was somebody else’s recipe and really delicious.
Melissa says
That’s good eating for a weekday! I usually default to a turkey burger at the cafeteria if I forgot to pack a lunch – your lunch looks much better (it must be the garnish).
Meghan says
Thanks. I find almost all my workday lunches come from grocery store. When it’s this good and looks so pretty, it’s hard for me to pass up.
Sunnie@ModernGirlNutrition says
That lunch sounds so good! (and obviously so easy haha). I bought a few packaged salads from TJ’s and they are awesome for taking to school. Great post as usual!
Meghan says
Thanks Sunnie. I need something I can take with me for work day lunches, and these work so well.
Jessie says
…. truth: I want that chocolate chip pie like PRONTO!!!
Meghan says
If you were here; I’d make it for you in a heartbeat.
Liz @ I Heart Vegetables says
I looooove apples and peanut butter! YUM! Now I’m craving this 😉
Meghan says
It’s an old classic, and it still works.
rebecca @ blueberry smiles says
that chocolate chip cookie pie looks absolutely amazing! i need an excuse (party, etc) to make it
luv what you do says
Ohh….cookie in the shape of a pie. Awesome!
And that risotto looks incredible!
Meghan says
The risotto was really good, and I don’t feel like it’s missing anything using white wine instead of cream. I hope you are in sunny Florida right now having a blast.
Sydney says
That Chocolate Chip Cookie Pie recipe is one of my favorites! I made it over the holidays for the first time and it was a hit! No one would ever guess what it’s made of 🙂
Meghan says
Isn’t it crazy Sydney? and delicious? even days later? I love this pie. Have you tried Katie’s sugar free version yet? I might give that one a whirl next.
Sydney says
It’s soooo delicious! I love it best kept in the fridge and taking out a chilled piece every time 🙂 And no I haven’t tried the sugar free version yet, I’ll have to give that one a whirl too!
Jess says
Though I love their convenience, I can’t help feeling a bit…conspicuous eating them in public. I’m the same way about lollipops and ice cream cones.
Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli says
You know, I rarely ever eat bananas by themselves. They always make their way onto pancakes, in oats, cereal, yogurt…but the next time I DO eat one, I’m totally going pirate on that thing! 😉
Mmm, huevos!!!
Meghan says
I want to see a banana picture. Allie, the Forgotten Beast, and I are thinking of having a contest.
Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli says
It’s on girl…pic coming soon to a broccoli blog near you! Oh god, my mother is going to kill me… bahaha!
Meghan says
I can hardly wait and apologize to your mom for me. 🙂
