How Does Your Garden Grow?

July 30, 2013 by Meghan 24 Comments

Awhile back, I planted a pot garden. No, not that kind of pot, you crazy kids.

Pot Garden - Tomatoes and Peppers

Recently, I have been seeing the fruits of my labor; literally.

Blush tomatoes. I’m just waiting for them to actually blush. Any day now….

Blush Tomato Plant

Peter Piper picked a peck of purple peppers. These lovelies also go by the name of the Chinese Five Color Hot Pepper Plant, but I like the tongue twister better. No surprise there.

Purple Peppers

Do you have a garden this year? If so, what’s in it? Bonus points for tongue twisters.

Mint is a fun one. It can take over your garden too if you’re not careful. Beware of mint and add it to your lemon water….it’s delicious. Oh and make some mojitos too.

Purple peppers? Those are too cool to look at.

Umm… We are growing Cool Cucumbers this year? Zaney zucchinni… Luscious Lettuce…. Now that’s just getting ridiculous 😉

I like the cool cucumbers. They sound tres chic.

I’m enamored with the purple peppers. I was shocked to actual see them and just how colorful they are. I can’t wait to try them now.

I have black thumb. Apparently it’s hard to kill cilantro and mint, but I accomplished that in record time last year. This is why we can’t have nice things…

Not true at all. Cilantro is a total son-of-a-bitch to grow. Whoever told you cilantro is easy is either fibber or some kind of gardening genius. I try to grow it every year, multiple times, and it always dies.
Mint, on the other hand, actually is pretty easy. It’s out in my flower bed and I literally do nothing, and it comes back every year.

I saw that purple pepper picture (ha!) on Instagram, but it still gets me. That color is just unbelievable! Have you tried them yet?
I’ve tried many a time to grow a garden but it never ever works. Usually not by my own fault, but because of the weather, bugs, or animals. It’s annoying. I *can* grow a mean bamboo, plant, though.

I haven’t tried them yet, but I’m really excited to try. I’m actually not sure when they are ready for picking. I need to do some googling on that one.
Bamboo plants are cool. I’ve always wanted one of those.

Never have I ever seen pretty purple peppers (does that count as a tongue twister?). We don’t have a garden this year since we’ve been moving around and I miss it! A pot (your kind!) garden is definitely in my plans for my own place once I finally get one 🙂

      I think it counts.
Pot gardens are the way to go, especially when you don’t have the space for a big garden or the neighborhood wildlife tries to eat all your goodies. Stupid wildlife.

My window herb garden is still alive and kicking! I haven’t ventured to outdoor plants yet – we have a shared yard and while I can get my dogs to behave, I keep getting visuals of my neighbor’s dog peeing on my tomatoes.

Eek, that would NOT be a good tomato.

I’ve got volunteer squash plants sprouting up all over–7 at last count, growing pumpkin, butternut squash, and unknown squashlike objects.

The squash vine borers are trying to bring them down, but haven’t been completely successful.

The tomatoes just keep getting bigger and bigger–no signs of turning red yet. I expect the moment we pull away from the curb they will ripen and be toast by the time we return.

Oh, I hope that isn’t the case. You need those tomatoes so you can make more pesto. I made my first batch this weekend; so damn good.
Are the volunteer squash from the compost?

The purple peppers look fantastic! My hot peppers are going crazy this year, but for the first time ever, my thyme isn’t doing well. I think we just had too much rain this summer!

That’s too bad about your thyme. My cilantro didn’t make it, but it never does.

I bought a mint plant from the store a week ago tomorrow (because it was the SAME freakin’ price as a bag of it) and SURPRISE!!! I haven’t killed it…yet!

Two spins and a snap! Ow ow! 😉

You go girl. You should nab yourself a basil plant too while you’re at it.
