Get your pads and pens ready because it’s time for the Week In Review.
The Week In Review is a list, in its purest form, not of the things you still need to do, but of all the things you have done in the last seven days. It’s an achievement list, an ode to yourself, a celebration of sorts, and a virtual pat on the back or smack on the ass. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
Need more details? Head here.
♫ You can do it, put your list into it. ♫
I’m not gonna lie, last week was another tough one and I’d have to say my biggest accomplishment was not walking out the door and abandoning my life, even though I threatened to multiple times. Despite it starting off rather rocky, we turned a corner mid-week, and I even managed to accomplish the odd assortment of things.
Let’s get listing:
I worked on Ave’s anger management issues, which after deep-seated analysis, I discovered often come from being overtired or hangry.
She is so dramatic. I have no idea where she gets it. Cough, cough.
To pay her back, I dressed her in the most embarrassing outfit I could find and paraded her in public.
(“Mama, why you do dis to me?” she says in her best breathy gansta voice.)
Along with the Hubby, we gave Ave her first full on bath in her tiny baby bath tub. It only took us four weeks to do it, and it gave Ave the opportunity to extract her revenge for my poor outfit choices. She screamed the entire three minutes it took us to scrub her down and then peed all over me the second I took her out. She loved her hooded towel though.
I partook in public displays of breasting, meaning I hit up the weekly lactation support group. These are fantastic for my mental health, and despite what the Hubby thinks, it has nothing to do with being surrounded by all those boobies.
I finally started to get into a bit of a routine with Ave’s daytime sleep schedule. We call it the “I will only sleep if you hold me for three hours prior” plan. It’s great for my biceps, although I should probably switch arms every so often.
I gave Gilmore Girls a break and watched the first three seasons of Friends instead. At some point, I will need to start watching something truly educational before all my brains fall out; they can do that now. I saw it on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy at three in the morning last week while breastfeeding.
I got my hair cut. All of them, in fact.
I ran a couple of solo errands. My big moment out included a quick trip to Pet Supplies and Target to pick up kitty litter and diapers. Yes, I know how to rage.
I had a visit with one of my besties, who started a new Etsy business selling specialized planner page inserts, with daily and weekly checklists complete with grid lines. Be still my list loving heart. I need these.
She also brought me a bucket of scones from my beloved Breadsmith.
Another of my besties made a house call, accompanied by an entire Whole Foods pizza and a giant salad. Clearly, my friends understand and respect my relationship status: “In Love With Carbs.”
Last but certainly not least, the Hubby and I hit up Nature’s Bin’s Five for Friday wine tasting. It was our first one since last August, and it felt good to be back in the saddle again. Of course, that could be the wine talking, since I have no idea how horses got involved.
It’s your turn. I want to hear from you. Link up and get yo’ list on.
What are three things you accomplished in the last week?
meredith @ cookie chrunicles says
ugh, I am sitting here feeling your pain of that first month with a newborn. It is really brutal stuff, especially with nursing. It takes at least 4 weeks for things to fall into place and then suddenly, it’s all so much better and slightly easier. The hardest part of the first month for me, aside from my monster NEVER sleeping, is that no one could really help me since I was nursing. But then, he smiled at me after a night of pure hell right at 4 weeks and it all changed. Sort of. He still didn’t sleep lol thanks for the link up!

It is brutal, and it’s nice to hear other mothers say the same thing. The nursing does make it tougher since I’m the only source for food right now. I will look forward to that little smile.

Oh Meg. I’m really feeling for you – even though I have zero real idea how it all feels and how you and your hubby are both surviving. What I can say is Im so glad you have marvelous friends that bring you food and that you had at least enough time to meet up with one and get out on your own for a bit. That must have felt so therapeutic. You – and your hair – look fabulous – even amidst all the stress and (Im sure) lack of sleep. And Ave looks fabulous too, even in her dramatic wails and gangsta hoods. She’s going to look back on this post one day and say, “Damn Mom… You rock (and I’m sorry for peeing on you).” Sending you any calming vibes I can!!

Marvelous friends who bring food are my salvation right now. There are days I wouldn’t be able to eat if it wasn’t for them and the Hubby.

Kirsten says
Meg,
I think one of the things that made my first month as a mom easier was that Erik spent half of it in the NICU and I spent all of it living in a hotel. So I wasn’t cleaning anything other than myself, the kid when he came ‘home’, and our clothes. When he was in the NICU I’d eat 2 meals at the hospital cafeteria–still adore a breakfast of scrambled eggs, corned beef hash, and rice thanks to that time–so I only had to feed myself once per day. My spouse was around for some of that time, and he helped a lot. By the time he went back to Japan I was 2.5 weeks post-C/S so I was getting around much better. Our dogs were back in Japan too, so I never had to worry about them either. Made things much easier.
I’m glad you’re finding your groove, and I love seeing these pictures of Ave. She’s got such an expressive face and such long fingers. It’s interesting to follow along your journey as my baby prepares to graduate high school.
Three things I accomplished last week:
1. I worked 2 long shifts with lots of chopping and stuff. I also volunteered at the thrift shop. I deliberately was unavailable on my day off so I could be home for lunch with my girl for the first time in forever it seems.
2. I’ve got a plan for my garden, and I’ve started to execute it–right now my 5 raised beds contain 1) garlic from last Fall, 2) peas, pickling cukes, and dill, 3) tomatillos, peas, and chard, 4) a paste tomato and basil (along with some forgotten garlic planted in 2014), and 5) nothing but marigolds . . . . I am waiting my shipment of 3 tomato plants so I can plant 2 in bed 5 and 1 in bed 4. Then my garden will be in GROW mode. Herbs are off doing their own thing, and I added a bunch of perennial flowers around. My cunning plan of filling the feeders with sunflower seeds has resulted in sunflowers cropping up all over the place. Hooray!
3. I reached out to the local farmer’s markets and grocery stores for photos to use in the local eating talk I’m giving this week at my community center. I stopped by last week to plug in my computer and make sure those photos look OK on screen. They do. Now all I have to do is finish the talk, practice the talk, and give the talk. Easy peasy? Oy.
Have a lovely week and think good thoughts for me Thursday afternoon/evening.

You are going to do awesome at the local eating talk. I only wish I could be there to cheer you on.
When you’re done with your raised beds, wanna come fill in mine? I’ve got garlic from last fall and I see my asparagus plant poking out. The rest is ready and waiting.

Sweet baby girl! I think my baby will speak in gangstah voice as well. And be able to fist pump.
You got a lot done mama! The lactation support group does sound wonderful, I’m researching that for myself. My fitness manager is a nurse and hooked me up with some contacts, yeahhhh.
My mom introduced me to the baby clothes section of Zara, and I fell in love with the clothes. I’m happy to say baby girl will at least have her top covered this summer. Not sure about her bottom but it’s hot in Houston.
I’m also excited for the cute koala bear wall decals I ordered. Probably my favorite part of the week.
Ave’s little face is so cute and expressive, love it!

I wish my friends made me scones! If you need something educational/relevant to life, you could watch crime or political dramas. They are scary accurate and I had to stop watching them because it made me lose faith in the political system hahaha
My biggest accomplishment was going self hosted and designing my blog! Wooooo! Huge learning curve here 🙂

I didn’t know what the hell I was doing with my first baby. My nipples were trashed, he gulped everything down in one minute only to barf it all up and I’d get mastitis every second day, it seemed. But then yeah, at around the 6 week mark when they start smiling, slowly turning into humans, is when things leveled out a bit. I’m glad you were able to get your hair cut and go out for a wine tasting, and I’m so glad you have good friends there to support you. Pizza FTW.

Glad you got out and had a little “you” time. I wish someone had told me just how hard maternity leave could actually be. Mentally I was a disaster, so that’s awesome that you have the lactation group. While I hated hearing women’s “horror” stories, I do kind of wish I had heard more of difficult those first 2 months could really be. Not gonna lie… I didn’t cry when I went back to work. I missed my bundles of joy, but mentally it was the first time I felt normal after giving birth.

Yeah these first few weeks have been insane and there are definitely days I want to walk away never to return. It’s hardest during the week when the Hubby is at work, and it’s just me and the baby with no relief. It’s nice to know though I’m not alone with these feelings, that it’s incredible common and most moms feel this way at one point or another. Thanks for the comment; I really appreciate it.

Cuteness overload would be a fitting alternative title for this.
First the stairs for the booty last week, now hour-long carrying around for strong arms – I see a fit mum guide written in your futute. Lots of sweat and probably cussing involved in the making, though, I’d guess.
Friends bringing much needed carbs, a wine night – I’m very happy to see you got some me time/opportunities to catch a breath in between all the strenuous days and nights.
Keeping my fingers crossed things will already get along a little more smoothly this week or at least allow for some mum breaks again!
