This past winter has been long and hard (that’s what she said).
I can’t even make it past the opening sentence without being wholly inappropriate. I like to think that’s a good thing.
A digression: I’m getting a little bored with my own link up party. Don’t get me wrong, I love to talk about myself (said all bloggers, everywhere), but I grow tired of recapping the same shenanigans every single week because as fun and exciting as my life is (Pet Supplies Plus is my new hangout on Saturday nights at 8:15 p.m.), I’m doing pretty much the same stuff on a weekly basis. Work, eat, work, cook, work, blog, work, exercise, rinse and repeat. I still love the idea of a Week In Review, but I need to shake things up a bit, which is where the long, hard winter comes in, complete with bad sexual innuendos.
This week instead of moving full force into the minutia that is my life, I’m going to list out all the signs I saw in the past seven days that Spring has in fact sprung. Yep, I did say list because no matter how far I stray from my own link up ideals, there will always be my beloved lists. No one can take those from me; myself included.
Let’s get listing:
- My feisty felines are shedding their winter coats, and my home is a den of cat hair, not to be confused with a den of thieves. Isn’t thieves what you think when you hear ‘den of something?’ No, just me? Must be my Catholic school upbringing, complete with being locked in a closet, Carrie style. That last part totally isn’t true; I just wanted to see if you were paying attention.
- The farmers markets around here are starting to sell produce. The heavens opened and the angels rejoiced. I scored a dozen eggs, spinach, kale, some fabulous homemade soft pretzels and kale tips. I shall allow you to make your own dirty joke here. Dream big, my friends.
- I devoured my first spinach salad of the season complete with hard-boiled eggs and smoked cheddar cheese.
- I also indulged myself with Sweet Potato Chickpea Burgers and Roasted Rosemary Brussels Sprouts with Blueberries. Davida’s sprouts would be phenomenal for Easter dinner, and I’ll take Jenn’s burgers any day of the week and twice on Tuesday.
- This past weekend we were graced with beautiful seventy degree weather, which means I went running….in SHORTS, with the Hubby. It was completely unintentional and I was embarrassed the entire time, but apparently we are now the couple who dresses alike. Never again, never again.
- I also spent some quality hours digging in the dirt. My palms are covered in callouses, and my hamstrings are so tight you could string a bow on them (I have no idea if I’m using this phrase properly) and I love it.
- I got my first bug bite of the season, right on my left tata. What can I say? Bugs in my neighborhood have good taste.
- Speaking of firsts, I awoke to my first dead chipmunk In. The. House. this morning. I’ll spare you a picture, but I’m pretty sure at least one of my kitties must be Houdini because I have no idea how they got Alvin, Simon, or Theodore inside, through locked doors, while I slept peacefully upstairs. What I do know is that my houseguest will be handling the clean up because I don’t do chipmunk removal. See, there are consequences to staying with me.
- Moving onto more pleasant things, another sign Spring has sprung is all the lovely flowers in my yard. They make me happy.
- As does Summer Shandy, a celebratory drink for completing my taxes, with two days to spare. *blows on fingers and dusts off shoulder.
- Oh and the neighborhood woodpecker is back and banging away, in full woodpecker style.

On that wholly inappropriate note…it comes full circle.
Enough about me. Let’s hear from you.

For more details, click here.
Link up and get your list on.
Please tell me how the cats got the chipmunk inside? through the locked doors? What signs of spring do you see in your neighborhood? Do you enjoy yard work, or digging in the dirt as I call it?
Fran@BCDC says
Love your signs of spring and Love your inappropriate comments! Have a great day, Meghan!
Meghan says
Welcome back Fran. It’s nice to see you again. I hope you had a great time in Florida.
Pip {Cherries & Chisme} says
Those purple flowers are stunning! I’m getting rather jealous of everybody’s weather improving whilst we head into Autumn here… Must.buy.a.coat.
Meghan says
Eek, you’re losing your weather now, huh?
The purple flowers came out beautiful; I even impressed myself.
Marina @ Lazy for Diet says
I can’t wait for warm weather for run in shorts too! At us it is still cool therefore the first wild flowers – everything, than I can brag. And I am very glad to participate in a Week Review 😉
Meghan says
Hooray, so glad you’re participating!! I love new victims…er I mean link ups. 🙂
Davida @ The Healthy Maven says
bugs love my tatas too! Even when I load myself with toxic deet! Now I want the brussels. Ima try it with frozen bloobs since the farmer’s markets are no where to be found here…why? BECAUSE IT’S SUPPOSED TO SNOW TOMORROW NOOOO
Meghan says
It’s supposed to snow here tonight too. Boo. Oh well, at least I got an entire weekend of beautiful weather.
I did use frozen blueberries for the Brussels Sprouts, which I loved. Seriously, it’s my new favorite way to eat sprouts.
Liz says
The chipmunk was in the house before lockdown.
You crack me up. I am not at all bored by Week in Review.
This past week I spent in my bikini under the glorious Florida sun only to be smacked in the face by reality when deboarding my plane in Fargo.
Meghan says
He must have snuck in the back door. Talk about crazy; I’m just grateful they didn’t drop him in my bed. Gah, can you imagine?
I’m envious of your Florida sun, but glad you got to enjoy some rays.
Khushboo says
Oh boy that sprouts with blueberry dish looks right up my alley- perfect for Spring! More than spring, it feels like summer over here in Mumbai:
*thanks to the scorching heat! I’ve busted out the shorts
*Mango season
*Swimming outdoors has become a regular fixture in my workout schedule
…and that’s just the start of it ha! I love that they sell bottled shandy over there. The only shandy available here is the DIY kind!
Meghan says
The blueberry Brussels Sprouts were fantastic. You should make them.
I’m envious of your pool pictures and your mangoes: sweet, succulent and juicy.
Megan @ The Skinny-Life says
Brussels sprouts with rosemary and blueberries sounds divine. I need to try this pronto!
Meghan says
Yes you do. It was fabulous!!
kirsten@FarmFreshFeasts says
Ok, the woodpecker one is my favorite. I will probably guffaw (and I never guffaw) next time I’m outside and hear our resident woodpecker. Wee Oliver Picklepants scans with his good eye, but I don’t think he’s ever seen the woodpecker. Yet.
I’m not linking up because I really just don’t have anything appropriate to link up. My spouse was a busy beaver hauling leaf mulch (free from the city–they come get our leaves in the Fall and we go get leaf mulch in the Spring) and the yard looks neat and tidy. Ready for tomorrow’s flurries.?
I’m taking the opportunity to make a vat of beef stock and then a vat of chicken stock since I’m off this week. I’ll fill up the freezer that’s looking a tiny bit spacious in the back.
But I’m not blogging about that accomplishment, so you get a comment not a link.
And I’m not bored.
Meghan says
Since tomorrow’s flurries have come and melted, I’m going to pretend they didn’t happen. That’s the bonus of replying to your comments days later.
I think (at your gently suggestion) I will make some veggie stock this weekend and maybe even my artichoke soup. I love that soup, and it might be nice to have this weekend and next week when the temperatures are still cool enough to enjoy soup.
I will take every comment you leave; they really make me smile. Not to get all cheesy, but you brighten my day. Oh crap, I got all cheesy. Sorry about that.
Sarah Pie says
I want the signs of spring to come back… we’re in the midst of a snowstorm and I’m not happy! As gross as it is I have to laugh at your cats chipmunk antics, as long as it’s not happening in my house. We actually used to have a huge chipmunk infestation outside our old house though so your cats would have been in heaven.
Meghan says
Every year I get a bevy of dead chipmunks, although I generally try to keep the corpses outside the house. At least this one wasn’t beheaded. 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons. says
A dead chipmunk? 😯 Okay, I’ll never complain about finding dead ladybugs in my place ever again. I usually get all jealous when I hear people talking about their cats because I’m allergic and can’t have any, so thank you for making me feel a little better about it <3
Meghan says
Actually I still love them. They’re worth a mountain of dead chipmunks, which is a good thing because I will have one before the summer is out. 🙂
Brittany says
OMFG that (wood) pecker photo..so much yes. UHH WTF I am a devout vegan, and would not change my lifestyle for much of anything, but that spinach/cheese salad..looks…DIVINE!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ME!?!?!
That poor chipmunk didn’t stand a chance against Max, he probably mistook the brown fur for bread.
Meghan says
You could pretend the cheese is carrot shavings. 🙂
Actually my middle one, Samantha is the hunter, although Max can catch a loaf of bread from nine yards away. 😉
Jess @ JessieBear What Will You Wear? says
1) It was super nice here too AND NOW IT’S SNOWING AHHHH. 2) Me and JD accidentally dress the same ALL the time! I’ve stopped being embarrassed. No shame.
Meghan says
No! You have to stop dressing alike. It’s awkward for everybody. Ha!!
Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli says
Haha! I just filed my taxes on Sunday too! Thanks for making me feel better about my latest and greatest in procrastination affairs! I seriously can’t beleive I put it off for as long as I did…especially since it took me like 30 minutes to do! Ugh, one of these days, I’ll learn…nah, probably not! 😉
But anywho, yay for SPRIIIIING! Those purple flowers are absolutely gorgeous! And hey, look at it this way, at least Alvin, Simon, or Theodore wasn’t in your BED! 😯
PS, glad to see a return of the pecker…I’ve missed him! 😉
Meghan says
Procrastination, smocrastination. The way I see it, we’re two days early. Bam!
I always miss the pecker when he’s not around. 😉
Juli @1000lovelythings says
Love how you twisted your list link-up this week! And don’t be bothered with any thoughts about inappropriateness! I love it! We need more inappropriate jokes in our lives 😉 It’s very refreshing just like spring 😉
Oh my gosh! A dead chipmunk in the house would be my dead! I can’t handle dead animals at all. My line is crossed with anything bigger than a bee. I can’t even look at it and touching it is absolutely out of question!
Meghan says
I’ve surprising adjusted to the chipmunks although I’d still rather not touch them. We get these creepy crawly bugs though that I can’t even handle; like not even a little bit. I scream and run away.
Inappropriate jokes make the world go around. Or maybe it’s science. Ah, whatever. 😉
Arman @ thebigmansworld says
Just putting it out there- If or rather, WHEN I am a houseguest, something like that was brought in- I’d cover it in olive oil and roast the mofo up. But will make sure it’s when the hubs is present- or someone who would appreciate it. Maybe the cats.
As long as the woodpecker isn’t keeping you up all night, that’s all good- but if it was let’s the protein the mofo too.
PS Hi from Melbourne- mothergoose made a baba ghanoosh which you would LOVE. …Come?
Meghan says
I bet you could turn it into some kind of savory pancake or waffle!!
I would love to.
