Currently: May 2018

May 17, 2018 by Meghan 20 Comments

It’s high time to slip another Currently post into the mix. Instead of rambling on, as is my usual custom, I’m getting right to the point today. You’re welcome.

Current Book: I’m about three quarters through Born A Crime by Trevor Noah, and it’s powerful, to say the very least. This book should be a mandatory read, followed shortly thereafter by The Hillbilly Elegy.

Current Drink: serious reads need serious cocktails, or pretty much anything I can sip on a patio. Spring is here, and I am definitely taking advantage.

Current Food: Mujadara, a super simple Middle Eastern dish made of rice, lentils and onions. It’s so easy, my main prerequisite, and packed with flavor. I’ve made it half a dozen times in the past few months.

Current Blessing: my family. I’m headed back to Buffalo again for a serious and sad affair, and to support my family, who mean the world to me. I love you guys to the moon and back.

Current Non-Guilty Pleasure: Ave and I were invited to high tea at The Macaron Tea Room. It was magical, beautiful, and extra enjoyable, even for the tiny human, who thankfully didn’t break a thing. Instead, she got to eat numerous macarons, her own star shaped grilled cheese sandwich, paint an edible cookie, and play dress up. Of course, she picked the fedora.

Current Confession:  I’m weaning off the antidepressant I’ve been taking for the last two years for the postpartum depression. I felt twitchy and another word that rhymes with it the first few days, but have been mostly OK since.

Current Bane of Existence: Until I saw this. I call bullshit.

Current Obsession: ramps, the love child of garlic and onions. I’ve been stuffing them in omelets, making risotto, pesto, and even soup.

Current Needs: to understand how to use the fancy pants camera I was gifted two years ago.

Current Excitement: Juli and Stefan are coming for a visit at the end of this month and I’m over the top excited to catch up with my my favorite introvert, foodie and planner girl. Did I mention my girl knows how to use a camera?

Current Mood: really, really happy and that’s saying a lot since my days of Zoloft are nearly done. 🙂

Your turn. What’s Currently going on in your world? Current book? Current confession?

I just had my first Caesar of the season last night. On our deck. It was fabulous. Best part is I still have half a jug of clamato in my fridge…

That high tea!! I remember going to a high tea with my Mom when I was little. It was so special. Those little sandwich towers. I didn’t get a fedora though. Pfft. How special for you and Ave!!!

I’m really sorry to hear about whatever is causing your return to Buffalo. Sounds like support and time together is needing. Thinking of you and your family <3

Thanks lovely. I appreciate the positive thoughts and love. I’m so glad you got to enjoy an outdoor beverage as well. I managed to get some garden therapy done this weekend, and I know you’d approve.

Every little girl needs a fedora.

I read the Trevor Noah book, and I want to read Hillbilly Elegy too. Let us know what you think about it! Also bookmarked the mujadara recipe. Perfect for a summer evening on the deck with a glass of pinot gris (from OR)! My mom liked to take me to tea, both as a little girl and as a grown up. I remember getting all dressed up and having a wonderful time. You are making great memories with your daughter!

Yes, the mujadara is great for summer eats especially paired with a fresh salad of tomatoes, cucumbers and feta.

I really enjoyed Born A Crime; it was much more uplifting than I had expected. The Hillbilly Elegy was less so, and I struggled to finish the last couple chapters, but I’m still glad I read it. I’m always curious to see how other cultures go about living.

Oh I hope your fam in Buffalo is ok! The high tea party with macarons and tiny sandwiches sounds like my cup of tea. Hehe sorry couldn’t help it. Seriously I would love to do that with lulu now that she’s a bit older. We did a fancy tea when she was an infant but neither of us enjoyed it. Right now we both live cookies and anything small and edible. And hats!!
I weened off an anti anxiety med years ago using GABA. It helped me tremendously because without the GABA I was having major twitches and brain quakes. All the meds are no joke!
Excited for your lovely friends visit!

The tea was such fun, and I’d love to take Ave again now and when she’s older. It could be a lovely mother daughter ritual.

Give Lulu a big kiss from me. I miss your little rapscallion.

Oh dear, Meghan, I am so sorry to hear of your sad trip, however glad that you are able to lend support. Close family is everything and we are, indeed blessed.

I could say that macaroons are my favorite cookie! But I am always calling the next shiny thing I see my new favorite! I love every cookie I see, even store bought fig newtons which so many think are gross! If I see them, they become favorite.

I am going to get your book, Born a Crime, since I’ve been wanting a good read. (if puppy Walter will let me take my eyes off long enough) I have read Hilbilly Elegy several months ago and it was a good, entertaining, and informative read, though toward the end, I will admit to having to make myself finish. I am not the person to advise on books however, my taste wanders off the beaten path! I do enjoy memoirs.

I l. o. v. e. that banana towel! It is blasphemy in the face of all banana lovers!

I love to hear about anyones “really, really” happiness, it makes me happy too! I have been especially happy lately too 🙂 Ha! Thanks to the addition of an antidepressant side salad to go with the one I was on. Haven’t felt this ‘not gloomy’ in 5 years. I love normal, it’s nice.

I hope your friend with fancy camera knowledge is helpful! I had one of those and one of my kids kept asking when I would be ready to give up and hand it over! I finally did after about just about the same length of time you’ve had yours and I just upgraded my phone for the better camera. He’s thrilled and so am I.

I felt the same way about The Hillbilly Elegy, especially the last few chapters, although I’m still glad I read it. Born a Crime was more uplifting and entertaining, although certainly eye opening too.

I’m so glad you’re not feeling gloomy. It’s amazing how much a mood elevator, natural or not, can make such a difference in your quality of life. Puppies certainly help too, or at least once they’re trained and not waking you up at all hours of the night.

oh no, I hope everything is ok back home…on a happy note, I love that you went for tea and she didn’t break anything. that would have been my first thought! lol. I always want to do the full tea experience at the plaza and yet, I haven’t. I’ve had their tea and I’ve stayed there yet I’ve never gone just for the whole tea experience and now you have it on my mind.

They brought Ave her own tea cup and pitcher filled with cows milk and I was certain she was going to dump it all over and break the fine china. Big sigh of relief.

Tea at the plaza would be amazing. You have to try it once, just to say you did.

So glad you’re feeling happy – banana judgment aside. 😉

I’m still loving those tea party pics. That’s one cute kid.

Mujadara is so good – and easy is key, of course! If you ever want a slightly more involved variation, try koshary – it’s kind of like an Egyptian cousin of mujadara. It has all the same components, plus pasta, chickpeas, and a vinegary tomato sauce.

Big hugs for your trip to Buffalo. Tough times are always made better with family though.
I am super excited for your visit from Juli and Stefan! And, of course, very envious! Hopefully she will be able to give you some tips for your camera and you can spend the whole summer snapping away at the glorious produce that is about to bestow you. And of course Ave pics… I need my dose of Ave!

You and David are always welcome to come to Cleveland too. You’d have a place to stay and a hefty dose of Ave to boot.

Oh boy, I have no idea about Nikon cameras. But I am sure we can figure out the basics together and then I can give you an intro in using the fancy camera. But consider this a fair warning, it’s addicting 😉
I love hearing that you’re so happy! And double yay for weaning off the antidepressants!
Can’t wait to sip wine with you on a patio! We are so excited to see you! There is SO much to catch up on! I think I need to write me some notes to remember everything.

Yes write notes; I’ve been doing the same with possible activities, restaurants, etc. How do you feel about zip lining? Too wild? I know one (or both of you) doesn’t love heights.

Day two with zero antidepressants, so I should be fully down with the withdrawal symptoms by the time you arrive. If not, your visit alone would cheer me up. 🙂

We love zip lining. Stefan is not that comfortable with heights but zip lining hasn’t been a problem in the past 🙂
YAY!!! Hope the transition is smooth sailing! And if everything fails I am there to cheer you up or cry in a pillow with you together. Whatever we feel like ;-P
