Week in Review: The Beach Vacation Edition (#142)

July 23, 2018 by Meghan 26 Comments

Get your pads and pens ready because it’s time for the Week In Review.

The Week In Review is a list, in its purest form, not of the things you still need to do, but of all the things you have done in the last seven days. It’s an achievement list, an ode to yourself, a celebration of sorts, and a virtual pat on the back or smack on the ass. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

Need more details? Head here.

♫ You can do it, put your list into it. ♫

Let’s get listing:

As you may recall, because clearly the dirty details of my life are scintillating and memory searing (cough, lies and deceit, cough), I spent last week vacationing with the family at a beach house in Canada.

Outside of the time spent driving to our neighbors in the north, every day was pretty much the same.

In the morning, we hit the path behind our cottage for a run with my Da (he’s too cool for the last d), the tiny human and whoever else wanted to join us. We were a motley crew of runners, bikers and stroller riders, and we only lost my father once in the “jungle” when he went to “water” the bushes.

(Some of us got snacks while exercising.)

(Riders on the storm.)

The rest of day was spent eating, napping, playing games, on the beach and in the water.

Every single day last week.

Hashtag living the dream.

(One day, Ave climbed up and jumped off this ramp 98 times exactly. I counted because I’m anal.)

(In five years, they’ll be playing poker for pennies.)

(Sand break.)

Except one particularly gloomy grey day, where we opted to escape the beach in favor of visiting our flying friends at the butterfly conservatory.

(Cousins forever.)

That same day, we toured a local art fair and did a little painting of our own before paying a visit to Niagara Falls.

All in all, it was a wonderful week, and while crossing the Peace Bridge yesterday afternoon, Ave chirped from the back seat of our car, “Goodbye vacation. I love you.”

For all my foodie friends out there, I’ve got two new tried and true recipes coming to the blog soon, so stay tuned.

This kale salad kicks things up a notch with the addition of sweet cherries, tangy feta, and candied walnuts. You'll never see kale the same way again.

It’s your turn. I’d love to hear from you. Link up and get yo’ list on.

Sounds dreamy indeed. Glad you got to take yourself on a vacay. Ave’s face in the painting picture. Too cute to handle.
Pumped for those recipes! I’m ready to be back in the kitchen.

“Goodbye vacation. I love you.” —-> See. We all need to do this. Say thank you for the things in our lives. This morning I said thank you to the sun. Out loud and proud. Keep going Ave!

So happy to hear it was the week it was meant to be. Relaxing, rejuvenating, intuitive. And obviously, Ave had a wonderful time. I mean look at that painters’ smile. She’ll remember these weeks for the rest of her life.

Hope I’ll be able to join you again at some point!

Awww! I love vacation too, Ave! And I have always wanted to see Niagara Falls! But the idea of all those butterflies fluttering about me kinda reminds me of Hitchcock’s “The Birds”. I just don’t think I could do it. I’ll take my fluttery friends one or two at a time in the garden!

Is that a kohlrabi? Are you about to put a kohlrabi in a thai-style noodle dish?
    Guess I’ll find out. 😉
“Goodbye vacation. I love you.” That’s the cutest thing.

Yes it’s kohlrabi and yes it’s a thai style noodle dish. I need to figure out what to call it now. Is it Ramen? Is it curry? Is it exciting. Hell to the yes. 🙂

Sounds like the perfect vacation. My family has switched to every-other-yearly vacations – as the family grows, so does the difficulty of getting everyone in the same place at the same time.

Thankfully most of my family is all in Buffalo still (at least during the summertime), so we’re able to make it work. I’m the only one with a drive and it’s about 3.5 hours so definitely doable.

We just checked them out from a lookout point, although I can’t wait to go back when Ave is a bit older and do the Maid of the Mist and the more touristy things.

Your vacation sounds absolutely wonderful. It’s everything a vacation should be – family, fun, a body of water, and games.

We have a butterfly conservatory near us (at Hersheypark) and took the grandkids there last winter. They loved it! I have a fantastic picture of my grandson with a butterfly perched neatly on his head. He expression is so cute!

Niagra Falls is very cool too – especially where you can walk behind the falls in a raincoat. The first time we took our kids there, the middle one’s response was “Meh! I thought it would be bigger.” It was Niagra-freakin’ Falls!!!

    Kids!

I can’t wait until Ave is old enough to do things like the Maid of the Mist, although she loved the butterflies and I was able to transfer one from my finger to hers. She stayed still and everything. I was super impressed.

Hooray for vacations! I’m also super jealous of men. Do you know how many times I’ve needed to “water the bushes” while running????

And 98 jumps? Sounds like the concept is solidly grasped. I’m so proud.

He waters the bushes every time we run, sometimes more than once. Now you know where my tiny bladder comes from. He also sweats like a wild animal. Remind you of someone? 🙂

And how cool to take a visit to Niagara Falls. I would love to visit one day.

I basically grew up with the Falls in my backyard (or 30 minutes away) so it’s always been easy to take them for granted. It was awesome though seeing them and the butterfly museum through Ave’s eyes. Hell, seeing anything through her eyes gives you a whole new perspective.

I am so glad you had a great time with the family. I love the picture of Ave in the sand. I had a ‘family workout’ last weekend too. I did ‘yoga’ with my nieces. Which actually means they climbed on me and I lifted them up a lot. We even tried a little tower but that flopped haha.
I spot red that curry! I am intrigued 🙂

Yep, it’s a curry sauce with kohlrabi noodles. Now I need to figure out what to heck to name the damn thing.

I am well versed in being the jungle gym these days. It’s fun and exhausting all at the same time.
